The Russian government has approved an additional 1.4 billion roubles to support cleanup efforts following the oil spill caused by the tanker wreck in the Kerch Strait on December 15, 2024. This new funding comes on top of an earlier allocation of 8.5 billion roubles.
According to the Russian government’s press service, the funds will go to the Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport, known as “Rosmorrechflot.” The agency is responsible for monitoring oil pollution in the affected waters and for organizing cleanup operations.
The new funding will be used to inspect the sunken tankers and identify any areas where fuel oil might still be leaking. These points will then be sealed to prevent further contamination.
The initial spill, which occurred during a major storm, released large quantities of fuel oil into the sea, polluting waters around the Kerch Strait and raising environmental concerns across the region.
The announcement was first reported by the Caucasian Knot on June 10, 2025.
