Chevron confirmed on Wednesday that a fire on its Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) offshore platform in Angola has injured at least 17 workers and left one person missing.
The fire began on Tuesday, according to Chevron’s subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Ltd. (CABGOC), which operates the platform. Emergency teams are still searching for the missing worker, while four of the injured remain in serious condition.
CABGOC said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The company did not comment on whether production has been affected.
The BBLT complex is located about 85 miles off the Angolan coast in Block 14. It is one of Chevron’s major assets in West Africa, with a peak output capacity of over 200,000 barrels of oil per day.
A Chevron spokesperson told Reuters, “Our immediate priority is the safety and well-being of our personnel. We are working closely with local authorities and supporting the affected workers and their families.”
It is unclear if any foreign contractors were among the injured. The Angolan Ministry of Mineral Resources and Petroleum acknowledged the incident but has not issued an official statement.
No deaths have been confirmed so far, and there has been no public update on whether nearby platform operations have been impacted.
Chevron said it will share more information as it becomes available. The fire is one of the most serious offshore accidents in Angola’s energy sector in recent years and raises concerns about safety in deepwater operations.
