Trump Slams UK Energy Policy, Urges More North Sea Drilling

by Krystal

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again criticized the United Kingdom’s energy strategy, calling for more North Sea oil drilling and less reliance on wind power.

In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump advised the UK to cut energy costs by scrapping wind energy projects and supporting oil and gas exploration in the North Sea.

“I strongly recommend to them… stop with the costly and unsightly windmills, and incentivize modernized drilling in the North Sea,” Trump wrote. “A century of drilling left, with Aberdeen as the hub… U.K.’s energy costs would go WAY DOWN, and fast!”

Trump also took aim at the UK’s current tax regime, calling it “old fashioned” and saying it discourages oil production rather than supporting it.

This is not Trump’s first comment on the UK’s energy direction. In January, before his inauguration campaign ramped up, he criticized the UK’s windfall tax on North Sea producers and its push toward clean energy. At the time, Trump reacted to Texas-based Apache’s announcement that it would exit the UK North Sea, citing the tax burden.

“The U.K. is making a very big mistake. Open up the North Sea. Get rid of Windmills!” Trump posted, attaching an article about Apache’s decision.

His latest remarks come amid growing concerns over the UK’s clean energy goals. SSE, a major UK energy firm, recently said it would cut renewable energy investments by £1.5 billion ($2 billion) through 2027. The company cited economic challenges and a shifting global environment.

That announcement followed a similar move from Danish energy giant Orsted, which pulled back from its Hornsea 4 offshore wind project due to rising costs, supply chain issues, and market risks.

As the UK faces tough questions on energy security and affordability, Trump’s comments have added to the ongoing debate over the balance between green energy and traditional fossil fuels.
