Eni has officially started gas production from the Merakes East field in the Kutei Basin, offshore Indonesia, the Italian energy company announced on Tuesday.
The Merakes East field is part of the East Sepinggan block, where Eni holds an 85% operating stake. This new production is expected to add around 18,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day to the company’s total output.
The gas produced is processed at the Jangkrik Floating Production Unit before being transported to Indonesia’s internal market and the Bontang liquefaction plant for both domestic use and export.
This development is a key part of Eni’s strategy to tap into Indonesia’s significant gas resources, in partnership with SKK Migas, Indonesia’s upstream regulator and supervisor.
Eni has also recently entered talks with Malaysia’s state energy company, Petronas, to form a joint venture aimed at managing selected upstream assets in both Indonesia and Malaysia.
Having operated in Indonesia since 2001, Eni currently produces approximately 700 million standard cubic feet of gas per day in East Kalimantan.
