Kolkata witnessed a marginal increase in petrol and diesel prices starting from May 12, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday. This price adjustment comes after oil marketing companies (OMCs) readjusted the basic price of fuel, a move that has direct implications for consumers in the city.
The revision has led to petrol in Kolkata now being priced at Rs 105.41 per litre and diesel at Rs 92.02 per litre. Specifically, petrol prices have gone up by 40 paise per litre, while diesel has become costlier by 20 paise per litre. This change is a result of the OMCs’ periodic review of the basic price, which acts as a benchmark before the inclusion of central and state taxes. The adjustment is influenced by multiple operational and logistical factors that the companies take into account to maintain their business viability.
Interestingly, the price movement in Kolkata stands in contrast to what is happening in other regions. For instance, Patna experienced a significant 60 paise per litre dip in diesel prices. Meanwhile, fuel prices in other eastern states have remained stable, showing no signs of change. This divergence in fuel price trends across different locations highlights the complexity of the fuel pricing mechanism in the country, with each region’s prices being affected by a unique set of circumstances.
