Cummins Launches B7.2 Diesel Engine to Step up Efforts in Mid-Sized Application Field

At the National Trucking Equipment Association (NTEA) Work Truck Week event held in Indianapolis, Cummins officially launched the brand-new B7.2 diesel engine. ​

Empowered by advanced technology, it meets the diverse application requirements

As the latest member of the Cummins HELM™ platform B series, the B7.2 diesel engine was launched following the B6.7 Octane engine. It is equipped with the most advanced technology and will continue to serve various medium-sized and special-purpose vehicle application scenarios, including buses, express delivery vehicles, engineering vehicles, garbage collection vehicles, tractors, etc. ​

The displacement of this new engine has been slightly increased to 7.2 liters, aiming to create a global platform to ensure that customer vehicles adapt to future development needs without sacrificing performance and durability. A larger displacement enables a wider torque output range, providing flexibility for different application scenarios and working cycles. ​

Jose Samperio, vice president of North American Highway Vehicle business, pointed out: “For more than 40 years, our customers have been using B-series engines and rely on them every day to meet their demands.” For us, it is crucial to create a future-oriented and durable engine while providing the reliability and performance that customers expect. The B7.2 engine has been upgraded to an unrestricted high-end performance rating, with a power range of 240 to 340 horsepower and a torque of 650 to 1,000 pound-feet. ​

In addition, the new engine is equipped with automatic shutdown and start-stop functions, which helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also offers options for compressed release engine braking and extended oil change intervals in the oil pan. Meanwhile, it is equipped with Cummins’ full set of digital technologies, which can enhance performance, maximize vehicle operating time and reduce the total cost of ownership. Through Cummins’ intelligent computing hardware Acumen® and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) pre-installed solutions, B7.2 achieves digital connectivity, enabling customers to instantly access a range of applications and functions, including predictive diagnostics and advanced over-the-air upgrade capabilities, etc. It also supports Cummins maintenance monitoring, reducing the number of vehicle visits to repair shops and lowering operating costs. ​

Production layout and marketing promotion planning

The B7.2 engine will be produced at the Rocky Mountain Engine Plant in North Carolina and will be fully operational across North America in 2027. From March 5th to 7th, at the NTEA Work Truck Week event held at the Indianapolis Convention Center, Cummins’ booth (#763) will showcase the B7.2 engine and other mid-sized engine product series.
