Diesel Spill Near Dallas Center Reaches Creek, Triggers DNR Probe

by Krystal

WAUKEE, Iowa — A diesel spill in Dallas County is under investigation after thousands of gallons leaked from an agricultural site and some of the fuel entered a nearby creek, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The spill occurred early Saturday when an above-ground storage tank began leaking at a site near Dallas Center. The DNR reported that approximately 4,000 gallons of diesel were released.

At first, the fuel was contained in a nearby pond and around the tank. But later that day, Waukee residents reported strong fuel odors near Little Walnut Creek. The DNR confirmed that some diesel had reached the creek.

In response, absorbent booms were placed in the creek to help control the spread of the spill. So far, no dead fish have been found in the affected area, and the DNR says there is no immediate health risk to the public.

However, residents may continue to notice a strong fuel smell and are advised to avoid contact with the creek water as a precaution.
