NRG Energy, GE Vernova, and Kiewit’s subsidiary, The Industrial Company (TIC), have teamed up to expand electricity generation capacity in the U.S., aiming to meet the growing demand for computing power and generative AI (GenAI).
This partnership combines the strengths of a power generation company, an original equipment manufacturer, and an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm. The goal is to quickly deliver efficient power solutions to support the expanding GenAI sector.
The collaboration aims to reduce the time it takes to bring new power generation online, ensuring the rapid deployment of electricity capacity as demand rises. Robert J. Gaudette, executive vice president of NRG’s business and wholesale operations, explained that the rising electricity demand—driven partly by GenAI and the expansion of data centers—requires new, innovative partnerships to increase America’s generation capacity quickly.
“These three industry leaders are committed to executing with speed and excellence to meet our customers’ generation needs,” Gaudette said.
The initial focus will be on four projects, which will add over 5GW of new natural gas combined-cycle power plants for the ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) and PJM (Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland) markets. The first 1.2GW of capacity is expected to begin commercial operations by 2029, using two 7HA gas turbines secured through a slot reservation agreement with GE Vernova.
The model for these projects is designed to be both replicable and scalable, with the potential to expand to a future pipeline of 10GW to 15GW and to other regions across the U.S. Subsequent projects are scheduled to come online by 2032, ensuring a steady supply of power to support the growing GenAI industry.
Dave Flickinger, executive vice president of Kiewit, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “We’re thrilled to be part of this initiative to support technology development in the U.S. Our extensive experience as an EPC contractor in the power sector will help us meet the speed, safety, quality, and delivery demands of this venture and make us a strong partner to NRG and GE Vernova.”
